About This Event

Festival overview

Hera Panchami (the fifth day after Rath Yatra) is a unique and dramatic ceremony. Goddess Lakshmi, upset that Lord Jagannath left her behind, sends her messenger to the Gundicha Temple. In a symbolic act of displeasure, a piece of Lord Jagannath's chariot (the Nandighosa) is ritually broken. This festival reflects the deeply human and emotional nature of the relationship between devotees, the goddess, and the Lord.
