Temple History
Growing the temple with the local community
The history of the Sydney Shree Jagannatha Temple is a story of devotion, perseverance, and collective faith—guided at every step by the boundless grace of Mahaprabhu Lord Jagannatha. It is a journey that began not with bricks and mortar, but with a shared longing in the hearts of devotees to experience the living presence of the Lord of Shree Kshetra in Sydney. As the Odia and Jagannatha-loving community in Australia grew, so did the desire to worship Lord Jagannatha in accordance with the sacred traditions of Puri Dham. Devotees yearned for a space where rituals could be performed with authenticity, festivals celebrated with grandeur, and future generations introduced to the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of Jagannatha consciousness. This collective aspiration laid the foundation for what would later become the Sydney Jagannatha Temple. Through tireless effort, selfless volunteer service, and Mahaprabhu’s blessings, the dream gradually took tangible shape. A dedicated place was hired in Sydney to establish regular temple activities, uphold traditional Jagannatha neeti, and ensure that seva and puja were conducted strictly in accordance with age-old customs. Every milestone whether arranging a place of worship, installing the deities, or opening the temple regularly was achieved through collective dedication and unwavering faith. Today, the Sydney Jagannatha Temple stands as a living testament to what is possible when devotion leads the way. Entirely supported and run by volunteers, the temple continues to grow as a beacon of Jagannatha bhakti in Australia faithfully observing rituals, celebrating festivals, and serving the community with humility and dedication.

About the Organisation
Shree Jagannatha Consciousness ANZ
With the boundless grace of Mahaprabhu Lord Jagannatha, the Sydney Shree Jagannatha Temple stands as a sacred spiritual home for all devotees in Australia and beyond. Rooted in the ancient and timeless traditions of Shree Kshetra, Puri, our temple is a humble effort to keep alive the divine culture, rituals, and values associated with Lord Jagannatha, Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Sudarshana in a land far from our birthplace, yet close to our hearts.
At the heart of the temple lies seva and bhakti. All temple activities are carried out in accordance with traditional Jagannatha neeti and temple customs, with emphasis on purity, discipline, and devotion. Regular pujas, bhajans, kirtans, and observance of important tithis and festivals form the spiritual rhythm of the temple. Special care is taken to maintain the sanctity and authenticity of rituals, reflecting the living heritage of Lord Jagannatha.
Sydney Shree Jagannatha Temple is run entirely by volunteers, whose selfless service is inspired by the belief that serving Mahaprabhu is the highest form of worship. Every offering, be it time, effort, or resources is made with humility and heartfelt expression of gratitude to the Lord of the Universe.
Our Temple
Jagannath Temple Castle Hill is the first dedicated Lord Jagannath temple in Australia, inaugurated in 2025. The temple serves the Indian community of Greater Sydney, bringing the ancient traditions of Puri, Odisha to the southern hemisphere.
Lord Jagannath — meaning "Lord of the Universe" — is an all-encompassing form of Lord Vishnu revered across India, particularly in Odisha.
The Deities
The temple is home to four main deities:
- Lord Jagannath — the main deity, a form of Lord Vishnu. His distinctive form with large round eyes represents the all-seeing nature of the divine.
- Lord Balabhadra — elder brother of Jagannath, representing strength and power.
- Devi Subhadra — the sister of the two brothers, representing shakti (divine energy).
- Sudarshana — the divine disc weapon of Vishnu, representing protection.
